60:0 Յաղագս ընդվզելոյ Սահակայ իշխանին յԱշոտոյ արքայէն, եւ ըմբռնելոյ ի նմանէ, եւ յաղագս գործոց ինչ այլոց իշխանաց:	60:0 Prince Sahak Rises in Insurrection against King Ashot, and Is Seized by Him; On the Works of Other Princes:
60:1 Զայսու ժամանակաւ ոմն Հագարացի, Փարկինի անուն իւր՝ ոստիկան ի Հայս յամիրապետէն անտի առաքեալ եւ ընդ իւր բերեալ թագ՝ դնէր ի գլուխ թագաւորին Գագկայ՝ երեքկին զնա պսակեալ ի վերայ Հայաստանեայցս, եւ այլ եւս բարեվայելուչ զարդուք զնա շքեղացուցեալ:	60:1 About this time, the caliph sent to Armenia as governor (ostikan) a certain Hagarite by the name of P’arkini, who placed on the head of king Gagik’ the crown that he had brought with him, and thus crowning him king over the Armenians for the third time, bestowed on him suitable prizes:
60:2 Ապա եւ թագաւորն եւս ոչ սակաւ ինչ պատիւս եւ պարգեւս առատաձիրս նմա շնորհէ. այլ եւ ամիրապետին եւս բազումս առաքէ գանձս ոսկւոյ եւ արծաթոյ զկէսն ի սակն արքունի եւ զայլսն ի նպաստ օժտութեան:	60:2 In return, the king also honored him greatly, and presented him with generous gifts. Moreover, he sent to the caliph a large amount of gold and silver, part of which was in lieu of the royal tribute, while the rest was offered as a gift:
60:3 Բայց ոստիկանն Յուսուփ յաւէտ իմն ընդ այսոսիկ զչարեալ՝ ահագինս կրճտէր զատամունսն ի վերայ թագաւորին Գագկայ, սպառնացեալ լի ապականութեամբք եւ մօտալուտ բանիւք:	60:3 The ostikan Yusuf, however, greatly angered by these, gnashed his teeth horribly at king Gagik, and threatened him with intimidating words of imminent destruction:
60:4 Բայց հոյակապ իշխանն մեծ Սահակ, որ որդիացուցեալն էր փեսայութեամբ զթագաւորն Աշոտ, հրապուրեալ ի բանս թովչաց ոմանց չարախորհաց՝ ընկլոյզ զիմաստութիւն իւր մեծ, եւ ապա սկսաւ չարիս իմն ի վերայ թագաւորին նիւթել, իբր յօտար թշնամւոյ:	60:4 Be that as it may, the splendid and the great prince Sahak—who had adopted king Ashot as his foster son by marrying his daughter to him—enticed by the words of certain malignant slanderers, drowned the voice of his great wisdom, and began to contrive evil against the king, as if against a foreign enemy:
60:5 Եւ իբրեւ սառնամանիք ցրտութեան ձմերայնոյն ի բաց եդաւ, ապա երկաքանչիւրք նոքա զօրաժողով լինէին ի մարտ ընդ միմեանս պատերազմել. եւ այնուհետեւ հասեալք ի մի վայր ի գեօղն Ախայեանս՝ ճակատս ռազմի մարտկաց ընդդէմ միմեանց պատրաստէին:	60:5 And when the frost of the winter season disappeared, both of them respectively levied soldiers and prepared for war against one another. Thereafter, having arrived at the same place in the village of Axayeank’, they arrayed the warriors in line of battle opposite one another:
60:6 Ապա մեծամեծք աւագանւոյն յանդիմանեալ զերկաքանչիւրսն՝ իբրեւ զհպարտս եւ անձնասէրս զնոսա լինել եւ սկիզբն զինքեանս ամենայն լաւութեան եւ քաջութեան ցուցանել. եւ այսպէս համոզեալ՝ ի մէջ նոցա դաշինս հաստատեն խաղաղութեան: Եւ ապա բազում ուխտ երդմանց գրով կնքեալ տան իրերաց քրիստոսադիր կիտիւն եւ միջնորդութեամբ սրբոյ նշանի խաչին:	60:6 Then, the foremost members of the nobility admonished both of them for their arrogance and selfishness, and (urged them) to display themselves as exemplars of total virtue and fortitude. Thus, having persuaded the latter, they induced them to make a treaty of peace between themselves. Then, the king and his father-in-law exchanged many a solemn oath in writing, and sealed their agreement with the sign given by Christ and the intercession of the Holy Cross:
60:7 Եւ ապա թագաւորն ընդ կրունկն դարձեալ վաղվաղէ չուէ գնայ ընդ դուռն Դվին քաղաքին. եւ անդ բազում արեան ճապաղիս ի նոցանէն հեղեալ եւ առ հասարակ յաւարի առեալ զնոսա՝ հնազանդեցուցանէր զամբարտաւան եւ զբիրտ ապստամբութիւն նոցա ընդ լծով ծառայութեան իւրոյ:	60:7 After this, the king turned back, and immediately came to the gates of Dvin, where he shed much blood, and completely ransacking the place, reduced the arrogant and brutal rebels to submission:
60:8 Աստ ուրեմն ապա մեծ իշխանն Սիսական տոհմին՝ Սմբատ, երիս եւս եղբարբքն հանդերձ ցասմնական իմն սրտիւ դժգմեալ ընդ Հագարացւոյն, որ յայնժամ զգաւառն Գողթան բռնակալեալ պայազատէր՝ խնդրէին առ ի նմանէն յինքեանս դարձուցանել զսեպհական իւրեանց ամրոցն Երնջակ եւ զառ ստորոտով նորա զգաւառն, զոր Յուսփայ ոստիկանին առեալ տուեալ էր ի ձեռս Գողթան բռնակալին. այլ նա իբրեւ յարքունուստ զայն նմա շնորհեալ համարէր եւ ոչ առնոյր յանձն տալ:	60:8 At this time, Smbat, the great prince of the Sisakan house, as well as his three brothers were greatly annoyed by the Hagarite overlord, who tyrannized the district of Goght’n at that time. They demanded that he return to them their hereditary fortress Ernjak and the district at her foot, which had been given to the tyrant of Goght’n by the ostikan Yusuf. The tyrant, however, considering this a gift from the royal court, did not wish to surrender it:
60:9 Իսկ ապա երկաքանչիւրքն կողմանք զօր գումարեալ գունդ կազմեալ՝ իբր հրոսանուէր իմն դղրդմամբ մարտ ընդ միմեանս հարկանէին:	60:9 Thereupon, the two sides summoned their forces and encountered one another in combat with the din of battle:
60:10 Եւ իբրեւ ջոլիր ռազմին կազմեցաւ եւ ասպատակն զմիմեամբք սփռեցաւ եւ գունդն Հագարացւոյն աղմկեալ յետկոյս հարան մերձ ի պարտել, անդ ապա զօրն Գաբաւոնացի իշխանին Սմբատայ, որ ի թիկանց կուսէ կային Վասակայ եղբօր նորուն ի ձախակողմ թեւոյն յանկարծօրէն խորհրդեամբ չարի համագունդ ընդ Վասակայ ձի ի ներքս տարեալ եւ առ հասարակ ի վերայ յարուցեալ դիաթաւալ զքաջն եւ զկորովին Վասակ արկանէին. եւ ինքեանք թիկունս առ ի գնալ դարձուցեալ՝ չուէին ի Նախջաւան քաղաք:	60:10 After the battle lines had been arrayed, the two sides met, and right then, when the forces of the Hagarites had raised an outcry almost at the point of defeat in order to turn on their heels, the Gibeonite forces of prince Smbat which were situated on the left-rear of the latter’s brother Vasak, suddenly galloped their horses with wicked intent, and attacking Vasak en masse, knocked the valiant prince headlong to the ground. Then they turned on their heels and came to the city of Naxjawan:
60:11 Իսկ զդիակ գեղեցիկ երիտասարդին բարձեալ եղբարցն ի տեղւոջէ ճակատուն՝ տարեալ եդին ընդ հարս իւրեանց, արարեալ կոծ մեծ ի վերայ նորա:	60:11 The corpse of the handsome youth was recovered from the battle-front by his brothers, who mourned greatly over him, and bearing his body buried him with their ancestors:
60:12 Բայց թագաւորն Աշոտ իբրեւ զկամակատարս զԴվին քաղաք իւր պատրաստեաց, ապա թիկունս առ ի գնալ ի նոցանէ դարձուցեալ՝ չուէ յաշխարհն Վրաց եւ անդ ընդ իւր զթագաւորն Վրաց Ատրներսեհ առեալ՝ երկաքանչիւրք նոքա ի մարտ ընդ իշխանին Գուրգենայ մտեալ՝ խնդրէին զիւրաքանչիւր վրէժս. զորս նենգապատիր չարակնաբար գործեցին նմա ահս ապիրատս եւ աշխարհաւեր կործանումն:	60:12 After king Ashot had forced the city of Dvin to submit to him, he turned his back and went to Iberia, where he took with him Atrnerseh, the king of Iberia, and they both declared war on prince Gurgen in order to exact vengeance on him. With immense wickedness they caused unnecessary terror and utter destruction:
60:13 Եւ թէպէտ միւս եւս թագաւորն Աշոտ եւ եղբայր արքայորդւոյն Աբասայ գրոհ իմն ի Գուրգէն տուեալ հաւաքէին. սակայն ոչ կարացեալ ըստ օրինի մարտից զդէմ նոցա ունել՝ ի հովիտս խորափիտս եւ յանտառախիտ խորաձորս ամրացեալ լինէին:	60:13 Although the other king Ashot and Abas, the brother of Ashot son of Smbat, had come to (the aid of) Gurgen with a multitude, yet, they could not withstand the foe in battle and took refuge in the deep valleys and the densely wooded glens:
60:14 Բայց անձկութիւն վայրացն ոչ թերեւս սպառ սպուռ զասպատակ հինին ի նոցանէն կարողանայր արգելուլ. այլ միշտ զբազմութիւն վահանակիր զօրուն իբր ասպարափակս իմն ընդդէմ նոցա տուեալ եւ ի յաղեղն եւ ի սուսեր վառեալ՝ բազում վիրաւորս տապաստ ի նոցանէ արկանէին, մինչեւ խօսէին նոցա ի հնազանդութիւն եւ ի խաղաղութիւն. եւ զորս ի ձեռանէ նոցա բերաւ աւերումն եւ սասանումն աշխարհին՝ կրկին տուժիւք զնա նորոգեալ:	60:14 Nevertheless, even the inaccessible nature of the place could not ward off entirely the assault of the enemy, who raised before them the protective shield of the multitude of their peltasts, and armed with bows as well as swords wounded and felled many of them, until the rebels promised to submit to them, and sought terms of peace. As for the destruction and devastation that they had caused to the land, they agreed to pay for it twice as much as the amount of the damage:
60:15 Եւ մինչդեռ այնպէս զսահման խաղաղութեան մերձ էին ընդ միմեանս հաստատել՝ իսկ եւ իսկ ժամանեալ գուժկան յՈւտի գաւառէ առ թագաւորն Աշոտ հասանէր, ասելով նմա զելս իշխանին Սահակայ աներոյ իւրոյ յՈւտի գաւառ եւ զուժգնապէս յաւարի առնուլն առ հասարակ եւ զյափշտակութիւնն ի նոցանէ ամրոցացն որ ի Ձորոյփոր՝ տանել զգաղթ յաշխարհին յամրոցս իւրոյ տէրութեանն եւ զիւր արձանանալ եւ կալ նստել զլեռնակողմամբ գաւառին:	60:15 While they were thus on the very verge of coming to terms of peace, a messenger suddenly came to king Ashot with ill tidings from the province of Uti, and informed him of the incursion of his father-in-law Sahak, of the latter’s vehement ransacking of everything, the seizure of the fortresses in Dzorap’or by his men, as well as the driving of the fugitives of the land to the fortresses of his domain, and his retreat into the mountainous regions of his province:
60:16 Զայս լուեալ ամենահարուստ եւ բազմահանճար թագաւորն Վրաց Ատրներսեհ՝ լքեալ թողու ի բաց որ առ ձեռն կայր պատրաստ զգործն Գուրգենայ քեռորդւոյ իւրոյ՝ իբր պարապոյ գոլ զայն հոգ եւ այլում տեղւոյ թողլի է, եւ վաղվաղակի պատրաստաբար իմն յուղարկէ առ ի յիւրմէ զԱշոտ թագաւոր Հայոց յանբոկ գործոյն իշխանին Սահակայ:	60:16 Upon hearing of this, Atrnerseh, the most vigorous and prudent king of Iberia, put aside the task with which he had been occupied at the moment, that is to say, the matter concerning Gurgen, who was his sister’s son, and considering this as something that could be settled later at leisure, immediately and willingly sent king Ashot of Armenia to go and settle the affair of prince Sahak:
60:17 Բայց նորա զզօրս իւր յետ զթիկամբք իւր թողեալ եւ ընտրեալ արս իբրեւ երեք հարիւր միայն սաստիւ հապճեպով գան հասանեն ի Ձորոյփոր: Եւ տեսանեն նախ զԿայանն կոչեցեալ բերդ յափշտակեալ իշխանին Սահակայ, եւ որ. ի նմա կայրն ի դիպահւոջ Վասակ տէր Սիւնեաց հանեալ արձակեալ զնա ի տուն հօր իւրոյ, եւ զայլ եւս ազատ կանայսն որ ի նմա ըստ սակի գերելոց, սա անց վարատեալ՝ եւ պահնակս զիւր յամրոցն կացուցեալ:	60:17 But Ashot left his forces behind, and chose only approximately three hundred men, with whom he quickly arrived at Dzorap’or. Here, they first saw that the fortress of Kayean had been seized by prince Sahak, and Vasak, the lord of Siwnik’, who was imprisoned there, had been set free and sent to the house of his father. Also, Sahak released the remaining azat women who were held captive in the fortress, and set his own garrison in it:
60:18 Ապա եւ զմիւս ամրոցն, որ էր մերձ ի նա՝ եւ զայն եւս գրաւեալ տագնապաւ տարակուսից եւ սրոյ ճարակ զբերդապահնակսն տուեալ՝ եւ խաղացուցեալ զգաղթ բնակչաց երկրին առ հասարակ աղխիւ իւրեանց յամուրս տէրութեան իւրոյ, եւ զարտորայս նոցա, որ մերձ էր ի հունձս՝ տարաժամ զայն հնձեալ գերանդիւք եւ հրաբորբոք հրկիզեալ. զի մի՛ կռուիցին կալ զետեղեալ ի նմա ոտք թագաւորին բնակութեամբ:	60:18 Then in great haste he had also seized the other fortress which was near Kayean, and having put the guards to the sword, had forced the inhabitants of the land to migrate with all their families to the fastnesses of his realm. And as it was near the time of harvest, he had ordered the harvest prematurely reaped with scythes, and had given it to the raging fire, lest the king might struggle to find a foothold there:
60:19 Արդ՝ իբրեւ զայնպիսին տեսանէր տաղտկալի տառապանս եւ զաղմուկ շփոթի զեղեալ հեղեալ զաշխարհաւ տէրութեան իւրոյ՝ այնուհետեւ ոչ զանգիտեալ ի բազմութենէ զօրաց իշխանին եւ ոչ զնուազունս իւր գունդ ի մտի եդեալ, չուէ գնայ ի հանդիպումն նոցա: Վասն զի բանակեալ զետեղեալ կային ի ծործորս լեռնակի միոյ ըստ արեւմտեայ կուսէ ձորոյն Տաւըշոյ, վարանեալ յափշտակել եւ ձգել յորոգայթս իւրեանց զթագաւորն:	60:19 But when king Ashot noticed the unpleasant distress and the confusion that had been brought upon his land, neither fearing the multitude of the forces of the princes, nor considering the paucity of his troops, he set out to meet them. The foe had pitched camp in the glens of a hill on the western side of the valley of Tawush with the intention to ambush the king and entrap him:
60:20 Եւ անդ ապա գտեալ բլրակ մի, որ ունէր զինքեամբ քարաժեռ շրջապատ, ի նմա ելեալ բանակէր զօրն ողջոյն եւ զգիշերն ամենայն:	60:20 There, having found a mound which was surrounded by boulders, the king ascended to the top, where he had pitched his camp that whole day and night:
60:21 Եւ պատգամ ապա զմի ոք եպիսկոպոսացն առ իշխանն Սահակ առաքէր ասելով. «Ո՞րպիսի ինչ չար, կամ զի՞նչպիսի ինչ վնաս առ ի յինէն քեզ բերաւ արդեամբք, զի փոխանակ այնր՝ արժանի ի քէն գտայ այսպիսւոյ իմն ծանր աղէտի, զոր տեսի գործեցեալ, եւ ոչ յետկար երդմանն քո ածէր զքեզ ի զղջումն. կամ ընդէ՞ր այժմ զրախնդիր լինիս հեղուլ զարիւն իմ առանց բանի պարտապանութեան:	60:21 Then, he sent one of the bishops as an envoy to prince Sahak with the following words: “What wickedness or damage did you suffer at my hands, in return for which you deemed me worthy of such severe disaster, such as I have witnessed? Didn’t the solemn oath that you made force you to regret your actions? Why are you at this time so vainly anxious to shed my blood for no reason at all:
60:22 Բայց արդ՝ դարձ ի բարկութենէ այտի եւ դարձո ի բարիսն զ՛ի նանիր թագուցեալ որոգայթ ապականութեանդ. եւ միայն զերկու ամրոցս զոր յափշտակեալ է քո՝ այսրէն տուր ինձ եւ զգաղթ աշխարհիս դարձո. եւ յայնմ հետէ եղիցի միատարր խաղաղութիւն ի մէջ մեր՝ որպէս հօր հարազատի եւ որդւոյ սիրելւոյ:	60:22 But now, supress your anger and turn the vain and vicious snares that you have concealed to good use. Return to me only the two fortresses that you have seized, and restore the captives taken from this province. Thencefore there shall be uniform peace between us, just like that between a real father and his beloved son:
60:23 Իսկ իշխանն զայսպիսիս լուեալ բան պատգամի եւ ոչ պատասխանւոյ թերեւս արժանի համարեալ. այլ եւս քան զեւս մռմռեալ՝ առ եպիսկոպոսն ասէր. «Դու նիստ աստ յիմում խորանի եւ ես առ նա սրով իմով չուեալ գնացից՝ վաղվաղակի զպատասխանին պատգամաց նմա հատուցից:	60:23 When the prince heard the words of the envoy, he considered it perhaps not worthy of an answer, and becoming ever more enraged, told the bishop, “You remain here in my tent, while I go to meet him with my sword and give an immediate answer to his demands:
60:24 Եւ զայս ասացեալ՝ գումարտակ զբոլոր զօրսն իւր առնէր աւելի քան զութ հազար արանց. եւ յառաջ կոյս մղեալ եւ հանդէպ բլրակին հորդան տուեալ, յորոյ վերայ կայր թագաւորն՝ հրամայէր հետեւակամարտ գնդին վահանափակ լինել, որ տեսութիւն իմն բերէր յինքն որպէս զանպարտելի պարիսպ. եւ ի թիկանց կուսէ նոցա զհեծելազօր գունդն պատրաստէր՝ սպառազինեալս եւ վառեալս ի զէնս եւ ի զարդս:	60:24 Having said this, he marshalled all of his forces, more than eight thousand men, and driving them forward he advanced them opposite the mound where the king was stationed. He ordered the infantry to seek shelter under their shields, so that the semblance of an impregnable bastion might be created, and in their rear he marshalled the cavalry armed with weapons and ornaments:
60:25 եւ առաջապահքն առաջի վահանափակ սպային սրավար երիվարօք խաղացեալ՝ յայսկոյս յայնկոյս երթային գային:	60:25 The advance guard, who were mounted on swift steeds, went from one side to the other in front of the peltasts:
60:26 Իսկ յելանել արուսեկին փայլատակունք ի մերկապատեան վաղակաւորացն բազմութենէ հատանէին ե՛ւ ի սաղաւարտացն ե՛ւ ի թիկնապահ ե՛ւ ի լանջապահ պղնձի տախտակացն ե՛ւ ի պահպանակացն բարձիցն եւ բազկացն:	60:26 When the sun rose, flashes of light sparkled from the multitude of unsheathed swords, helmets, brazen plates, that protect the back and the flanks, and the plates that cover thighs and arms:
60:27 Իսկ զայնպիսին տեսեալ բազում զօրս կուռս վառեալս զիւրեաւ զեղեալ թագաւորն՝ ապա եւ նա զհարիւրսն զիւր յետկոյս թողեալ, որ լքեալքն էին յերկայն ուղոյ ճանապարհաւն, միայն երկերիւրօքն իջանէր ի բլրակէն ընդդէմ նոցա:	60:27 When the king saw the vastness of the multitude of armed forces that were around him, he left behind the hundreds of men who had been exhausted because of the long journey, and having descended from the mound with only two hundred men, he came to confront the enemy:
60:28 Եւ անդ ապա տարածեալ զյետկար երդմանն իշխանին առաջի երեսաց Աստուծոյ՝ այսպէս եւ յինքեան ասէր. «Եթէ ես ինչ սխալեցի, կամ ստեցի այսմիկ երդման՝ հատո Տէր Աստուած զվնաս ստութեան իմոյ ի գլուխ իմ. եւ եթէ իշխանն ստունգանեաց սմա՝ ի նա հատուցեալ զվնաս իւր, փրկեա զիս ի տարապարտ մահուանէս, զոր նիւթեալ ածեն ի վերայ իմ:	60:28 Thereupon, displaying before God the solemn oath of the prince, the king said to himself: “If I have been in any kind of error, or if I have broken this oath, make amends to me, O Lord, for my wickedness and deception. On the other hand, if it was the prince who refused to abide by this, then compensate him for his wickedness, and save me from the iniquitous death which they have prepared:
60:29 Եւ ապա զյետկար քարտին ի գրաստս խաչին սրբոյ կապեալ, զոր սովորն էր միշտ առաջի իւր շրջեցուցանել, յանկարծակի զմի զինուորութիւն երկերիւրք նոքա զինուորեալք եւ ի ձայն բարձր աղաղակեալք՝ ձի ի ներքս տանէին:	60:29 Then he attached the text of the oath to the mantle of the cross which he was wont to carry before him, and suddenly his two hundred soldiers raised a loud cry in unison and made their horses run at a gallop:
60:30 Եւ նախ ինքն իսկ յասպարիսին շահատակեալ եւ յական թօթափել իբրեւ հողմ ինչ զնոսա փոթորկեալ՝ եւ ոչ մի ոչ մնաց ոք ի տեղիս ճակատուն. եւ ոչ բնաւ իսկ երկուք ի միասին ի նոցանէն գտանէին, այլ ցան եւ ցիր սփռեալ գլուխս կոհակացն եւ ընդ հովիտս եւ ընդ խորաձորս եւ ընդ անտառախիտ մայրիս, ոչ թերեւս առ ի նոցանէն վրիպեալ ոք ի փոքու է մինչեւ ցմեծն, բայց միայն երկուք նոքա՝ իշխանն Սահակ եւ Գրիգոր որդի նորուն, զոր ձերբակալ արարեալ տանէին:	60:30 The king was the first to distinguish himself in the arena, and like a tempest having dispersed the enemy in the twinkling of an eye, he drove every one away from the battle field, so much so that not even two enemy soldiers could be seen together. They were scattered on the mountaintops, in valleys, in the depths of glens, and in the dense thickets of the forests. Perhaps no one among them from the youngest to the oldest, was at fault except for two people, namely prince Sahak and his son Grigor, who were both seized and taken captive:
60:31 Եւ ապա զամրոցն առ հասարակ զԳարդմանայ թագաւորն ինքն գրաւեալ եւ զբովանդակ աշխարհն յիւր անուն նուաճեալ հնազանդէր:	60:31 Then the king also seized the fortress of Gardman, and brought the entire province under his sway:
60:32 Իսկ ապա ի նանիր պակուցումն իմն երկիւղի մահու ի մտի եդեալ թագաւորին, զի թէ թողից, ասէ՝ զիշխանն եւ զորդի նորուն, զմահն իմ այս գուշակէ. եւ եթէ ի դիպահոջ զայդպիսի երեւելի արս կացուցից եւ զերծ յայլոց ձեռաց լինիցի դոցա, զոր օրինակ Վասակայն, եւ այնպէս անշուշտ մահ իմ առ դուրս կայ:	60:32 Subsequently, struck with a vain fear of death, the king reasoned as follows: “Should I let go of the prince and his son, this would foreshadow my own death. On the other hand, should I keep such renowned men confined in prison, they would be rescued by others, as the case was with Vasak, and to be sure death would await me on my own threshold:
