19:0 Յաղագս տառապանաց աշխարհիս Հայոց յերեսաց հագարացւոց, եւ գործոց Ներսեսի կաթողիկոսի:	19:0 The Afflictions that the Hagarites Inflicted on Armenia and the Works of Katholikos Nerses:
19:1 Ի ժամանակի աստ յայսմիկ Վարազտիրոց՝ որդի քաջին Սմբատայ, փախստեայ լեալ յՌոստոմայ իշխանէ Ատրպատականի՝ չուէ գնայ ընտանեօք եւ աղխիւ առ կայսրն Հերակլ. վասն զի նենգ թագուցեալ յինքեան Ռոստոմայ սպանանել զՎարազտիրոց, սակս այնորիկ գնացեալ տարաբնակէր ի Յոյնս:	19:1 At this time, Varaztiroc’, the son of the valiant Smbat, fleeing from Rostom, the prince of Atrpatakan, went to the Emperor Heraclius with his family and bondsmen. He went away to live abroad among the Greeks because Rostom was secretly plotting to kill him:
19:2 Ի սմին յայսմիկ աւուրս կայսրն Հերակլ զԴաւիթ Սահառունի կուրապաղատ արարեալ՝ իշխան Հայոց կացուցանէր. որ մեծաւ ճոխութեամբ եւ յաղթութեամբ բազմաւ քաղաքավարէր զիշխանութիւնն ամս [Դ]. եւ ի հրամանէ նորուն շինէր իսկ եկեղեցին գեղեցկայարմար, որ ի քաղաքագեղն Մրեն:	19:2 In the same period of time, the Emperor Heraclius made Dawit’ Saharuni curopalate and set him up as prince of Armenia. The latter ruled for three years with wisdom, great distinction and much success. The magnificent church in the komopolis of Mren was built at his order:
19:3 Իսկ յետ երեամ մի՝ անարգեալ ի նախարարաց եւ զօրաց իւրոց, հալածեցաւ:	19:3 But after three years, being dishonored by the naxarars and his forces, he was persecuted:
19:4 Եւ յայնմ հետէ ապա ի չար հակառակութենէ նախարարացն եւ ի նանիր նախանձուէ դղրդեալ՝ կործանեցին սպառ սպուռ զՀայաստանեայսս. բայց միայն բարեպաշտ իշխանն Թէոդորոս ըստ սակաւաձեռն կարի՝ դիմակաց հինից թշնամեաց գտանիւր:	19:4 Subsequently, shaken by the wicked antagonism of the naxarars and their vain jealousy, the Armenians were completely destroyed. Only the pious prince T’eodoros confronted the enemy invaders in as much as his meager resources permitted:
19:5 Զայսու ժամանակաւ ապա երեւեալ ժառանգն Հագարայ աղախնոյն՝ Մահմէտ, որ ըստ Պօղոսի ի լեռնէն Սինայ կամ յանապատէ ի ծառայութիւն ծնեալ:	19:5 At about this time there appeared Muhammad (Mahmet), the progeny of the maid Agar who according to Paul had come from Mount Sinai or the desert and had borne (children) into slavery:
19:6 Սա հպարտացեալ ի վերայ քրիստոսադրոշմ եւ ստուգահաւատ ազգաց՝ լնոյր ապա զիւր կորստական խորխորատն խորհրդոց՝ ոչ տալով յագուրդ սրոյն ծարաւոյ, զոր միշտ արբուցանէր յարենէ վիրաւորելոց գերելոց գլխոց իշխանաց թշնամեացն՝ յարձակելոց ի վերայ հաւատացելոց. որ թէպէտ կարծեցուցանէր զինքն հակառակորդն հպարտացեալ ի հրամանէ Աստուծոյ գոլ քարոզ ճշմարտութեան Աբրահամեանն հաւատոյ եւ Մովսիսականն օրինաց, սակայն անաստուած աստուածածանօթութիւն նորա դաւաճանումն միայն լինէր մտաց տգիտաց:	19:6 Treating with arrogance the nations that were confirmed in the name of Christ and were adherents of the true faith, he subsequently satiated the destructive abyss of his thoughts by never giving fill to his thirsty sword which he always nourished with the blood of the wounded heads of the enslaved princes of the enemy, namely the faithful whom he had attacked. Although he pretended that he was the adversary who was exalted by the order of God to become the herald of the truth of Abraham’s faith and Moses’ laws, yet, his godless religion deceived only the ignorant minds:
19:7 Վասն զի դատապարտ էր դատաստան նորա, եւ անարգագոյն յարգանք նորա, եւ ուխտադրուժք ուխտք, եւ աննուէր նուիրմունք եւ անողորմ ողորմութիւնք:	19:7 For his judgment was unjust, his honor was worthless, his vows were untrustworthy, his offerings were not real and his mercy was merciless:
19:8 Քանզի եւ ոչ իսկ թերեւս ի Տեառնէ տուաւ աղախնորդւոյ ընդ որդւոյ ազատին լինիլ ժառանգորդ, որպէս եւ ոչ իսկ բաժին հաւատացելոյն ընդ անհաւատին:	19:8 For as the Lord certainly did not concede to the son of the servant girl (the right) to become an heir along with the son of the azat, so also He did not enjoin the believer to share his lot with the non-believer:
19:9 Արդ իբրեւ գումարտակ մեծ լինէր Հագարացին՝ եւ յաղթեալ կոտորէին առ հասարակ զզօրս կայսեր Հերակլի որ յԱրաբիայ, այնուհետեւ ազգք եւ ազինք պակուցեալք ի յահէ նոցա՝ հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն նոցա:	19:9 Now, when the Hagarites became a large force they completely vanquished the armies of the Emperor Heraclius in Arabia. Then all the nations were struck with fear and capitulated in submission:
19:10 Իսկ Երուսաղէմացիք զքրիստոսընկալ սուրբ խաչն վաղվաղակի յուղարկէին նաւօք ի Կոստանդնուպօլիս, զի մի՛ կրկին եւս ի թշնամեացն գերեսցի. եւ ինքեանք հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն Հագարացւոյն:	19:10 The Jerusalemites, however, immediately sent by ship the holy cross which had borne Christ to Constantinople so that it might not be seized again by the enemy and they themselves capitulated in submission to the Hagarites:
19:11 Աստ ապա վախճանեալ կայսրն Հերակլ՝ Կոստանդին որդի նորա ընդ նմա թագաւորէ:	19:11 Then the Emperor Heraclius died and his son Constans ruled instead:
19:12 Եւ վասն զի նախարարք աշխարհիս մերոյ անմիաբանք լեալք եւ ոչ ոք էր որ սմա զօրավարէր. յայնժամ ապականիչ զօրքն Հագարայ համարձակութիւն առեալ՝ յԱսորեստան կողմանէ ասպատակ ի Հայս սփռէին:	19:12 And because the naxarars of our land were disunited and there was no general commanding the armies, the infectious forces of Agar took the liberty of making inroads into Armenia from the region of Asorestan:
19:13 Եւ ըստ օրինակի հրացայտ իմն հրդեհի՝ ճարակ բոցոյ նոցա վաղվաղակի հասանէր յԱյրարատ գաւառ, հարեալ զդաշտավայրն ամենայն եւ պաշարեալ պատերազմաւ զԴվին քաղաք. եւ առեալ զնա զսուսերս իւրեանց արբուցին յարենէ քաղաքին, ուր ոչ եւս կայր թիւ բազմութեան սպանելոցն: Երեսուն եւ հինգ հազար ոգի գերեցին վաճառակուր լինել, եւ անցեալ գնացին՝ ընդ որ չուեալ եկինն, յԱսորեստան:	19:13 Like the consuming flames of a blazing fire they quickly reached the district of Ayrarat, spoiled the entire plain and laid siege to the city of Dvin which they took. They inebriated their swords with the blood of the city, where the numbers of the dead were beyond count. They took thirty-five thousand captives to be sold as slaves and returned to Asorestan from whence they had come:
19:14 Եւ իսկ եւ իսկ վախճանէր հայրապետն Եզր՝ կալեալ զաթոռ հայրապետութեան ամս տասն:	19:14 Immediately thereafter the Patriarch Ezr died, having occupied the patriarchal throne for ten years:
19:15 Իսկ Թէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէր եւ այլ նախարարք Հայոց հանդերձեցին կացուցանել յաթոռ հայրապետութեան փոխանակ Եզրի զՆերսէս եպիսկոպոս Տայոց. բայց նա յապշութեան լեալ յանհնարին կոտորելոցն, որ ի գերելոց քաղաքին՝ գաղտնագնաց փախստեայ լինել խորհէր՝ իբր ոչ կարող կալ ի քաղաքավարութեան այնմ աստիճանի մեծի:	19:15 Then, T’eodoros lord of Rshtunik’ and the remaining naxarars of Armenia made ready to set up Nerses, the bishop of Tayk’, in place of Ezr. The latter, however, dumbfounded by the great numbers of the massacred among the captives of the city (of Dvin), thought of secretly slipping away, arguing that he lacked the ability to administer such a high office:
19:16 Ապա յողոքական բանից եւ ի սադրելոյ նախարարացն հնազանդեալ հաստատէր:	19:16 Nevertheless, heeding the entreaty and admonishment of the naxarars, he was enthroned:
19:17 Եւ կացեալ յաթոռ հայրապետութեան՝ ամփոփեալ հաւաքէր զբազմութիւն դիականցն անկելոց՝ եւ ի նմին տեղ վերստին շինէր զհրդեհեալ զվկայարան մեծի նահատակին Սերգեայ:	19:17 After ascending the patriarchal throne, he had the numerous bodies of those who had fallen gathered and rebuilt the burnt martyrium of the great martyr Serge (Sergios) on its original site:
19:18 Զկնի ապա շինէ տաճար սրբութեան եւ ի վերայ վիրապի սրբոյն Գրիգորի, ուր ի մէջ թունաւորացն թաղեալ՝ առաքելանուէրն այրն Աստուծոյ զկամակոր վիշապին ջախջախեաց զգլուխ, ի մեռելութենէ խորոց կռապաշտութեան վերածելով զՀայաստանեայսս ի լոյս փառաց Որդւոյ Աստուծոյ:	19:18 After this, he built a sanctuary over the pit where Saint Grigor, the dedicated apostle of God, had been entombed amidst poisonous insects and had crushed the head of the perverse monster, thus transferring the Armenian people from the deadly depths of idolatry to the glorious light of the Son of God:
19:19 Դարձեալ յուսացեալ ի Տէր եւ ոչ ածեալ զմտաւ զկրթական արշաւանս հինիցն թշնամեաց՝ գեղեցիկ իմն մոլութեամբ դնէ ապա հիմն մեծ եւ հրաշալի բազմապայծառ յարկի տանն Աստուծոյ ըստ անուանակրութեան սրբոյն Գրիգորի՝ յանձն առնելով զկատարումն իմաստութեան շինողին Քրիստոսի:	19:19 Again he trusted the Lord and not taking into consideration the repeated incursions of the enemy forces, he laid with wonderful enthusiasm the foundations of a large beautiful and most magnificent house of God which he named after Saint Grigor, and whose completion he entrusted to the wisdom of Christ the Builder:
19:20 Իսկ ի հիմնարկել զաստուածակերտ փարախն բանաւոր հօտին Քրիստոսի՝ ի ներքոյ չորից սեանցն հաստահեղուսից բաժանեալ դնէ զնշխարս ոսկերաց սրբոյն Գրիգորի առ ի անշուշտ մնացականութեամբ պահիլ գանձոյն երկնաւորի ի գերչաց ապականչաց եւ ի պարծանս հաւատոյ քրիստոնէական կարգաց:	19:20 At the founding of the God-built fold of the reasonable flock of Christ, he divided the relics of Saint Grigor and placed them under the four well-fastened pillars so that the celestial treasure might remain safe from the hands of the destructive enslavers and become the pride of Christian faith:
19:21 Իսկ զքրիստոսադրոշմ եւ զպատուական գլուխն ոչ ի խորոջ, այլ արտաքոյ ի գզրոցի եդեալ՝ դնէ ի գանձարանս աստուածութեանն ի յոյս բարեաց փափաքողաց նմա եւ ի բժշկութիւն ախտակրելոց:	19:21 But he placed (Grigor’s) venerable skull, which bore the seal of Christ, not in a niche but out in the open in a cabinet in the divine treasury so that it might give hope for the best to those who sought it and cure the sick:
19:22 Բայց հայրապետն մեծն Ներսէս հրաման հայցեալ ի կայսերէն Կոստանդնէ՝ կացուցանէ զօրավար Հայոց զԹէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէրն:	19:22 The great patriarch Nerses requested the authorization of the Emperor Constantine and set up T’eodoros, the lord of Rshtunik’, as strategos of Armenia:
19:23 Արդ մինչ ցայս վայր ոչ եւ սէր իւրովի ելեալ ի պատերազմ ընդ ումեք ամիրապետի Հագարացւոյն. այլ միայն զզօրսն եւեթ ասպատակաւ հանեալ սփռէր ի ծագս երկրի:	19:23 Until now the Hagarite caliph had never personally gone to war against anyone, but only sent forces to raid the ends of the world:
19:24 Ապա յայսմ նուագի ինքն իսկ ամիրապետն ելեալ ի Սին անապատէ՝ անթիւ բազմութեամբ անցանէր ընդ ծով ի հարաւակողմ եւ յարեւելս, ի Պարս եւ ի Սագաստան, ի Սինդ եւ ի Մորան, ի Տարան եւ ի Մակուրան եւ յաշխարհն Հնդկաց, առեալ եւ աւերեալ զբոլորեսին՝ բառնայ զամենայն թագաւորութիւնս ազգաց բաց յՂիտանացւոց, որք են Հռովմայեցիք:	19:24 At this time, however, the caliph personally set out from the desert of Sin and crossing the sea with a large multitude proceeded in a southeasterly direction to Persia, Sagastan, Sind, Moran, Taran, Makuran and India, all of which he conquered and devastated. He overthrew the kingdoms of all the nations except that of the Ghitanac’ik’ who are the Romans:
19:25 Իսկ կայսրն Կոստանդին ի Մարտինեայ մօրուէ իւրմէ դաւեալ սպանանի՝ կացուցեալ փոխանակ նորա զորդի իւր՝ զԵրակլակ:	19:25 Soon the Emperor Constantine was betrayed and killed by his stepmother Mardine, who set up her own son Eraklak instead:
19:26 Իսկ Վաղենտին զօրավար հուպ ի վերայ հասեալ եւ սպանեալ զՄարտինէ եւ զԵրակլակ զորդի նորա՝ կացուցանէ թագաւոր զԿոստանդ որդի Կոստանդնի:	19:26 However, the general Vaghentin, who arrived in a short time, put both Mardine and Eraklak to death, and crowned Constans, the son of Constantine:
19:27 Իսկ ապա վասն զի հատուած եղեալ եւ եկեալ էր ի Յունաց ասպետն Վարազտիրոց՝ ապա մեծ հայրապետն Ներսէս խնդրէ հաշտութիւն նմա ի Կայսերէ, եւ տայ առնել զնա Կուրապաղատ եւ հրամանատար Հայաստանեայցս:	19:27 Then, since the aspet Varaztiroc’ had taken flight and returned from among the Greeks, the great patriarch Nerses asked the Emperor to be reconciled with him, and succeeded in having him appointed as curopalate and strategos of Armenia:
19:28 Իսկ նա յառնուլ զիշխանութեան պատիւն՝ վաղվաղակի վախճանի. զոր եւ տարեալ եդին ի Դարօն առ հօր իւրում քաջին Սմբատայ:	19:28 Soon after he had taken over the authority of office, he passed away; they buried him in Daron beside his father, the valiant Smbat:
19:29 Ապա Ներսէս զորդի նորա զՍմբատ ի պատիւ հօրն խնդրէ կացուցանել, եւ հայցէ եւս զԹէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէր ի զօրավարութիւն հաստատել: Եւ այսպէս պայազատեալ՝ ապա հովանայր առ ժամանակ մի ի չար հինից Հագարու աշխարհս մեր:	19:29 Then Nerses requested that his (Varaztiroc’) son Smbat be assigned to his father’s office, and also T’eodoros, the lord of Rshtunik’ be reinstated as strategos. Thus our land was given a ruler and became temporarily secure from the wicked brigands of Agar:
19:30 Իսկ իբրեւ բառնայր առհասարակ տէրութիւն ազգաց եւ ազանց, այնուհետեւ պատառեալ առագաստն հին հարաւոյ՝ շնչեաց ի մեզ նոր հարաւահողմ մահաբեր խորշակ. եւ տապախարշ արարեալ զմատաղատունկս իմանալի բուրաստանաց մերոց՝ խայթոցօքն խոցոտեաց:	19:30 Subsequently, after the universal downfall of the domains of all the nations, the ancient veil of the South was torn, and a new south gale, the death-bearing xorshak (simoon), blew on us, and having burned the seedlings of our spiritual orchards, severely wounded us with her sting:
19:31 Եւ այսպէս ապա յամս սակաւ արագընթաց ազգք հարաւոյ փոթորկեալ պտուտեալ տիրեցին ամենայն երկրի. զոր տեսեալ Թէոդորոսի եւ այլոցն եւս նախարարացն՝ եւ պակուցեալք յահէ հինից եկելոց՝ հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն Հագարացւոյն, դնելով ուխտ ընդ մահու եւ կռելով դաշինս ընդ դժոխոց:	19:31 Thereafter, in a few years’ time, the swift nations of the south stormed and dominated all the world. Seeing this, T’eodoros and the other naxarars, terrified by the advent of the invaders, capitulated in submission to the Hagarites, seeking truce in exchange for death and concluding an alliance in exchange for hell:
19:32 Եւ այսպէս ի բաց կային ի Կայսերէ:	19:32 And thus, they seceded from the Emperor:
19:33 Իսկ Կայսեր զօրս բազումս գումարտակ արարեալ՝ չուէ գնա ի Հայս ընդ իւրեւ նուաճել, որում ոչ ոք թերեւս գտաւ հնազանդեալ բայց միայն ի Վրաց աշխարհէն:	19:33 The Emperor, however, gathered a large force and came to Armenia in order to take possession of the country. With the exception of Iberia, he found no other (land) that had remained obedient to him:
19:34 Ապա կայսրն Կոստանդին յաւէտ իմն բարկացեալ՝ խորհէր կործանմամբ սաստիւ բառնալ զերկիրն ի միջոյ:	19:34 Then, greatly distressed by this, the Emperor Constantine thought of reducing the country to naught:
19:35 Իսկ հայրապետն Ներսէս մեծապաղատ աղաչանս արքային մատուցեալ՝ դառնայ յայնց կամաց իւրոց:	19:35 But he changed his mind after the patriarch Nerses had pleaded with him:
19:36 եւ ապա հեզաբար գնացեալ ի քաղաքն Դվին իջաւանս ի տան կաթողիկոսարանին արարեալ. եւ անդ ապա հրամայէ Հոռոմ քահանայիցն պատարագ ի սուրբ եկեղեցւոջն մատուցանել. եւ քարոզէր ի նմա զժողովն Քաղկեդոնի. եւ հաղորդեցան օրինացն ի միասին թագաւորն եւ հայրապետն մեր Ներսէս:	19:36 And then, he gently came to the city of Dvin, and made his quarters at the katholikosate, where he ordered the Greek clergy to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in the holy church, and there he professed the Council of Chalcedon. The Emperor, our patriarch Nerses and the other bishops who had gathered received the sacraments in communion:
19:37 Եւ այսպէս ապա թէ՛ կամաւ եւ թէ՛ ակամայ պատճառք գայթակղութեան բազմաց այս լեալ՝ շարժեցաւ հաւատն, զոր ընկալեալ էր ի սրբոյն Գրիգորէ եւ ցայն վայր անշուշտ կացեալ եւ մնացեալ:	19:37 Thus, whether willingly or unwillingly, they provided a cause for outrage among many. The faith which had been received from Saint Grigor and had remained constant until then was shaken:
19:38 Իսկ մի ոմն յեպիսկոպոսացն ի վայր ի բաթրոնէ բեմին իջեալ՝ լռիկ իմն ծածկեցաւ յամբոխին:	19:38 One of the bishops, however, descended down the steps of the bema and quietly disappeared among the people:
19:39 Իսկ իբրեւ յայտ իրք եպիսկոպոսին գայր, ածաւ եպիսկոպոսն առաջի արքային. եւ ապա հարցեալ առ ի նմանէ, «Թէ ընդէ՞ր ոչ ընդ իս կամ ընդ քում հայրապետին ոչ հաղորդեցար». նա պատճառս փաստաբանականս ի մէջ առնոյր, «Առ ահի սրտիս՝ ասէ, զայն գործեցի, քանզի մեք՝ ասէ, մինչ ի տախտակի տպաւորեալ նկարապաճոյճ դեղով միայն զձեզ կայսերսդ տեսանեմք՝ դողումն զմեզ պատեալ պաշարէ, թողում ասել զկենդանի դիտակ երեսացդ նկատել եւ հաղորդակից եւս լինել:	19:39 When the action of the bishop was revealed, he was taken before the emperor who questioned him (as follows): “Why did you not receive communion either with me or your patriarch?” The bishop offered the (following) arguments: “I acted thus because of fear in my heart since while looking at the colorful painted images of your imperial majesties, which are imprinted on boards, we tremble, much less beholding your face in person and sharing the sacraments with you:
19:40 Կայսրն ասէ. - «Արդ հաղորդի՞ս ընդ քում պատրիարգիդ»: Ասէ եպիսկոպոսն՝ «Իբրեւ ընդ սրբոյն Գրիգորի. սակայն ինքն իսկ դա եղեւ պատճառք չ հաղորդելոյս իմոյ ընդ իւր:	19:40 The emperor asked: “Now, will you receive the sacraments with your patriarch?” The bishop answered: “(I shall), as if with Saint Grigor. Nevertheless, he was responsible for my not sharing the sacraments with him:
19:41 Զի երկու ամօք յառաջ քան զայս հրամայէր դա ժողով եպիսկոպոսացն առ ինքն լինել. որք միաբան ընդ դմա ձեռնարկ արարեալ՝ նզովեցին զամենայն հերձուածողս, եւ առաւել եւս զժողովն Քաղկեդոնի, եւ ես եւս ապա խառն ընդ դոսա:	19:41 Two years prior to this he ordered a council of bishops, who being of one mind with him signed a document anathematizing all the heretics and especially the Council of Chalcedon. I also was among them:
19:42 Վասն որոյ Կայսր զայրագնեալ յանդիմանէր զնենգութիւնն Ներսեսի ի լեզու իւր. եւ ապա այն եւս եպիսկոպոս հաղորդէր ընդ նոսա՝ օրհնելով զթագաւորն, եւ թագաւորն զնա:	19:42 The emperor became furious at this and admonished Nerses for his deceitful tongue. Subsequently that bishop also received the sacraments with them; he blessed the king (emperor) and the king blessed him:
19:43 Եւ ապա ըստ հապճեպ տալոյ խնդրակաց ի Կոստանդնուպօլսէ՝ գնայ Կայսրն փութանակի. իսկ հայրապետն Ներսէս երկուցեալ իմն ի սաստիկ ցասմանէն Ռշտունեաց տեառնն՝ երթեալ դադարէր ի Տայս:	19:43 Then, upon the entreaty of envoys from Constantinople, the emperor departed in haste, and the Patriarch Nerses, fearing the severe wrath of the lord of Rshtunik’, retired to Tayk’:
19:44 Բայց յետ միանգամ եւ երկիցս ասպատակի Իսմայէլեան զօրու ի Հայս եւ սպառ սպուռ տիրելոյ՝ առին պատանդ յամենայն գլխաւորաց աշխարհին, զկանայս եւ զուստերս եւ զդստերս:	19:44 After the first and second incursions into Armenia and the total subjugation of the country, the Ishmaelites took hostages from all the magnates of the land their wives, daughters and sons:
19:45 Բայց Թէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէր գնայ ընդ Իսմայէլեան զօրուն յԱսորեստան իւրայօքն համազգեօք: Եւ անդ մեռաւ. եւ մարմին նորա բերեալ եդաւ ի գերեզմանի հարցն իւրոց:	19:45 T’eodoros, the lord of Rshtunik’, however, with his family went to Asorestan with the Ishmaelite army. He died there and his body was brought back and buried in the cemetery of his ancestors:
19:46 իսկ հայրապետն Հայոց Ներսէս յետ վեց ամի հալածանաց իւրոց՝ իբրեւ լուաւ զվախճանն Թէոդորոսի եւ զդադարումն Իսմայէլեան ասպատակին, դարձաւ անդրէն ի տեղի իւր: Եւ միախորհ ապա լեալ ընդ նախարարացն՝ իշխան ի վերայ Հայաստանեայցս կացուցանեն զՀամազասպ Մամիկոնեան, որ էր այր ընթերցասէր եւ ուսումնասէր եւ վարժ ի բոլոր հրահանգս, եւ զնախնական քաջութեացն պայման միշտ ջանայր լրութեամբ կատարել մրցարանաց կրթութեամբ:	19:46 After six years of persecution, when Nerses the patriarch of Armenia was informed of the death of T’eodoros and the cessation of the Ishmaelite invasions, he returned to his see. He and the naxarars being of the same mind set up as prince of Armenia Hamazasp Mamikonean who was a studious person fond of learning and well versed in all the branches of knowledge; he always tried to live up to the standard of the valiancy of his ancestors through the discipline of the arena:
19:47 Բայց հայրապետն Ներսէս պարապ անձին գտեալ՝ զարտաքոյս հրաշակերտ եկեղեցւոյն, զոր իւր իսկ էր շինեալ՝ շուրջանակի պատուար պարսպով փակեալ ամրացուցանէր, յօրինեալ ի նմա յարկս բնակութեան ինքեան հաստահեղոյս կոփածոյ քարամբք:	19:47 But the Patriarch Nerses, who found spare time for himself, surrounded the exterior of the magnificent church he had built with walls, within (the perimeter of) which he constructed his own residence that was built with well-fastened polished stones:
19:48 Այլ եւ կարգեալ կացուցանէր ի նմա ամբոխութիւնս երդումարդաց ըստ պայմանի քաղաքականաց. եւ ածեալ ջուր ի Քասաղ գետոյ՝ զամենայն աւազախիր առապար դաշտավայրն ի գործ արկանէր, տնկէր այգիս եւ բուրաստանս ծաղկոցաց:	19:48 Moreover, he populated the place with a great many serfs ( erdumardac’) in accordance with the standards of city dwellers and, bringing water from the K’asagh River, cultivated the sandy and rocky plain, planting orchards and gardens:
19:49 Աստ ապա դարձեալ սակս անհնարին եւ ծանրաբեռն ծառայութեանն ի բաց կացեալ Հայք յԻսմայէլեան բռնակալացն՝ հնազանդէին ի ծառայութիւն Կայսեր:	19:49 At this time once again the Armenians seceded from the Ishmaelite tyrants because of the extremely burdensome bondage and submitted to the service of the emperor:
19:50 Եւ մեծին Ներսեսի խնդրեաց յարքայէ առնել կուրապաղատ զՀամազասպ եւ հրամանատար Հայաստանեայցս. զոր ապա լուեալ ամիրապետին՝ զամենայն պատանդսն Հայոց առհասարակ կոտորէր՝ հոգիք իբրեւ հազար եօթն հարիւր եօթանասուն եւ հինգ:	19:50 And the great Nerses asked the emperor to make Hamazasp curopalate and strategos of Armenia. When the caliph learned of this, he executed all the Armenian hostages, about [1775] souls:
19:51 Եւ յայնմ օրէ հետէ ապա հոգի խռովութեան առաքեալ յԱստուծոյ ի մէջ բոլոր բանակացն Իսմայէլեան, եւ այր ի վերայ ընկերի յարուցեալ եւ սուր ի յազդեր կալեալ՝ անհնարին սատակմամբ զմիմեանս կոտորէին: Եւ սպանանէին եւ զամիրապետն իւրեանց՝ եւ ա՛յլ ի տեղի նորա կացուցանէին:	19:51 From that day a spirit of discord was sent by God throughout all the Ishmaelite armies; friend rose against friend; holding their swords at their flanks they cut down one another in a terrible carnage. They also killed their caliph and set up someone else instead:
19:52 Ապա զօրքն Իսմայէլեան, որ էր յԵգիպտոս՝ միաբանեալ ընդ կայսեր Կոստանդնի, հաւատացին ի Քրիստոս. եւ մկրտեցան արք իբրեւ վեշտասան հազար:	19:52 Then, the Ishmaelite forces in Egypt joined the Emperor Constantine and believed in Christ. As many as [16,000] people were baptized:
19:53 Եւ ապա զօրացեալ Մաւի եւ սպանեալ զայն եւս ամիրապետ՝ ինքն իսկ թագաւորէ ի վերայ բոլորից Հագարացւոցն, արարեալ խաղաղութիւն ընդ բոլոր ծագս երկրի:	19:53 Subsequently, Mawi (Mu’awiyah) ascended to power and having also killed that particular caliph ruled over all the Hagarites and established peace throughout the entire land:
