4:0 Յաղագս դարձեալ պատերազմին, որ եղեւ ի Բագաւան յաւանին Բագրաւանդ գաւառին ընդ Պապ թագաւորն Հայոց եւ ընդ զօրսն Պարսից:

 4:0 The second battle which occurred in the district of Bagrawand in the awan of Bagawan between the Armenian king Pap and the Iranian forces:

4:1 Ապա յետ այսորիկ թագաւորն Պարսիցն կրկնէր լինէր զօրաժողով ամենայն ուժով եւ ամենայն զօրութեամբն իւրով. խաղայր գնայր ամենայն զօրօքն իւրովք հասանէր յաշխարհն Ատրպայականի:

 4:1 After this the king of Iran again held a muster of all his forces and troops. With all his troops he went to the land of Atrpayakan:

4:2 Եւ ինքն անդր դադարէր սակաւուք, եւ զամենայն զօրացն զբազմութիւն առաքէր ի վերայ թագաւորին Պապայ ի պատերազմ:

 4:2 He himself remained there with a few people but he sent the entire multitude of the troops to war against king Pap:

4:3 Եւ եկեալ զօրքն Պարսից` ասպատակ առնէին եւ ի միջնաշխարհն Հայոց. ապա եւ թագաւորն Հայոց Պապ զօրաժողով առնել հրամայէր ի Բագաւանն:

 4:3 When the Iranian troops came, they raided the interior land of Armenia. Now Pap, the king of Armenia, ordered that a muster be held at Bagawan:

4:4 Եւ զօրքն Յունաց, որ էին յԵռանդին ի Բախշանն, ի մի վայր ժողովեցան առ թագաւորն Պապ, եւ ածին փոս զբանակաւն իւրեանց մօտ ի լեառն ի Նպատ` մերձ ի գետն Եւփրատ, եւ կազմեալ պատրաստեալ կային գործոյ ճակատուն:

 4:4 The Byzantine troops which were at Erhand and Baxish assembled in one place by king Pap, digging a trench around their banak near mount Npat, close to the Euphrates river. They were organized and prepared for battle:

4:5 Ապա զօրավարն սպարապետն Հայոց Մուշեղ ժողովէր զամենայն զօրսն Հայոց աւելի եւս քան զընսուն հազար, եւ կազմէին պատրաստութեամբ:

 4:5 Then the general sparapet of Armenia, Mushegh, assembled all the Armenian troops and organized them in readiness, more than [90000] men:

4:6 Իսկ իբրեւ զօրահատոյցն առնէր Շապուհ Պարսից թագաւորն զզօրս իւր ի վերայ աշխարհին Հայոց եւ ի վերայ զօրացն Յունաց, Ուռնայր արքայ Աղուանից անդ էր առ թագաւորին Պարսից:

 4:6 Now while king Shapuh of Iran was deploying his forces against the land of Armenia and against the Byzantine troops, the king of Aghuania, Urhnayr, happened to be with the Iranian king:

4:7 Ապա յառաջ կայր եւ խնդրէր պարգեւս Ուռնայր ի Շապհոյ արքայէն Պարսից, եւ ասէր` թէ Կամ լիցի քեզ, արանց քաջ, զի եւ ինձ պարգեւ հրաման տացես, զի Հայոց գնդին Պապայ արքային ես ինձէն ելից իմով գնդովս նահատակ. զի Արեաց գնդին պատեհ է դիպան ելանել զօրացն Յունաց, իսկ ես իմով գնդաւս Հայոց իշխանացն ելից:

 4:7 Urhnayr came forward and requested a favor from king Shapuh of Iran, saying: “If you would, oh bravest of men, order as a favor to me that I go with my brigade as a champion against the brigade of Pap, king of the Armenians. It is appropriate for the Aryan brigade to go against the Byzantine forces, so let me go against the Armenian princes with my brigade:

4:8 Եւ Շապուհ թագաւորն հաճեցաւ, եւ շնորհ կալաւ եւ հրամայեաց:

 4:8 King Shapuh consented, thanked him, and so ordered:

4:9 Բայց Մերուժանայ արծրունւոյ պատասխանի տուեալ Ուռնայրի, ասաց. Աստ արկեր զգազիւ գիրկս. բայց թէ ժողովել կարիցես, մեծ զարմանք իցեն:

 4:9 But Meruzhan Arcruni replied to Urhnayr, saying: “You have promised a lot, but there will be great amazement if you can do it:

4:10 Եւ գաղտուկ խորհրդով զայս գուշակութիւն Մերուժանն ի ձեռն հրեշտակի առ Մուշեղ զօրավարն Հայոց հասուցանէր` թէ գիտեա եւ պատրաստեաց, Մուշեղ. զի մեծաւ պարծանօք պարգեւ խնդրեալ է զձեզ Ուռնայրի արքային Աղուանից. արդ գիտես զինչ գործիցես:

 4:10 Meruzhan secretly sent this intelligence to Mushegh, the general of Armenia, by means of a messenger, and he note: “Be aware and be ready, Mushegh, for the king of Aghuania, Urhnayr, with great boasting has requested fighting you as a favor. So, look to what you are doing:

4:11 Բայց մինչ դեռ խաղացեալ գային զօրքն Պարսից ի վերայ Հայոց, եւ Ուռնայր արքայ Աղուանից իւրով գնդաւն ընդ նոսա, խօսէր թագաւորն Աղուանից ընդ այնոսիկ` որ ընդ իւրն էին, ասէր. Յանձն լիցի ձեզ, յիշելով ի ժամանակի` իբրեւ ձերբակալ արասցուք զզօրսն Յունաց, զբազումս ի նոցանէն ապրեցուսջիք, զի կալեալս կապեալս տարցուք յԱղուանս ի գործ կաւագործութեան գաղատոս որմաշէնս պիտոյից մերոց քաղաքաց, ապարանից եւ այլոց պիտոյից:

 4:11 While the Iranian troops were coming against the Armenians, having Urhnayr, king of Aghuania, along with them, the Aghuanian king spoke to the men in his brigade: “I am telling you something now to remember later on. When you have arrested the Byzantine troops, allow many of them to live. For we will bind them and take them to Aghuania and put them to work making bricks, as stone-cutters, and masons [creating] what is useful for our cities, mansions, and whatever else:

4:12 Այլ իբրեւ եկին հասին մերձեցան ի միմեանս գունդքն երկոքեան Յունացն եւ Պարսիցն, եւ հանդերձեալք խառնել ընդ միմեանս, ինքնին թագաւորն Հայոց Պապ վառեցաւ կազմեցաւ պատրաստեցաւ, եւ կամեցաւ ի ճակատ ելանել:

 4:12 When the two brigades, of the Byzantines and the Iranians approached each other and were preparing to clash, king Pap of Armenia himself armed, organized, prepared, and wanted to go into battle:

4:13 Ապա չառնոյր զայն նմա յանձն Տերէնտն զօրավարն Յունաց, թէ ի ճակատ մտցէ. այլ ասէ. Թագաւորն Յունաց զմեզ վասն քո յղեաց, եթէ երթայք զնա պահեցէք. արդ իցէ` թէ քեզ դէպ ինչ տայցէ, մեք զմեր թագաւորն որո՞վ երեսօք տեսանեմք, կամ զի՞նչ տայցեմք նմա պատասխանի. եթէ իցէ` եւ մեք աստի առանց քո ապրեսցուք եւ առ մեր թագաւորն հասանեմք, եւ լինիցիմք այնուհետեւ գլխապարտք առաջի մերոյ թագաւորին:

 4:13 But Terent, the Byzantine general, did not permit him to fight. Rather, he note: “The Byzantine emperor sent us to come and protect you. Now, should something happen to you, how could we face our king, or what answer could we give him? If we remain alive here, without you, and if we reach our emperor, we would be criminally responsible before our emperor:

4:14 Այլ արա դու, արքայ, զոր մեք ասեմք քեզ, ա՛ռ դու զեպիսկոպոսապետդ Հայոց զՆերսէս, եւ ել նիստ ի վերայ Նպատ լերինն յամուր եւ յանկասկած տեղւոջ, եւ սուրբ արքեպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս արասցէ աղօթս եւ խնդրեսցէ ի տեառնէ, զի տէր տացէ մեզ զյաղթութիւն:

 4:14 But king, you do as we tell you. Take the archbishop of Armenia, Nerses, and both of you go up onto Npat mountain to a secure and safe place. Let the blessed chief-archbishop Nerses pray and beseech the Lord that He give us the victory:

4:15 Եւ ի բարձուէն նայեսցիս, եւ տեսջիր զջան վաստակոց պատերազմին մերոյ զքաջութիւն եւ զվատութիւն, զոր առաջի քո գործեսցեն:

 4:15 From the height you will look and see the detemined labors of the battle, the bravery and cowardice, all of which will be accomplished before you:

4:16 Ապա թագաւորն Պապ հաւանեցաւ բանիցս այսոցիկ. առ ընդ իւր զմեծ քահանայապետն Ներսէս, եւ ելանէր նստէր ի վերայ նպատական լերինն. եւ ամենայն զօրքն Յունաց եւ Հայոց իջանէին ի տեղի պատերազմին:

 4:16 King Pap was persuaded. He took with him the great chief-priest Nerses and went up onto mount Npat. All the Byzantine and Armenian troops were descending to the place of battle:

4:17 Ապա եկն եւ զօրավարն սպարապետն Հայոց Մուշեղ, եւ եբեր զնշանսն իւր եւ զզէնն առ Ներսէս եպիսկոպոսապետն, զի օրհնեսցէ զնա, եւ իջցէ ի պատերազմ:

 4:17 Then the general sparapet of Armenia, Mushegh, came up bringing his emblems and weapon to the archbishop Nerses so that Nerses would bless him, and he would descend to the battle:

4:18 Եւ ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ յիշեաց թագաւորն Պապ զհին զրոյցսն, եւ ասէ. Յիշեցի ես զայն, զի բարեկամ է Մուշեղն թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ:

 4:18 At that moment king Pap recalled the old stories and note: “I remember that Mushegh is a friend of king Shapuh of Iran:

4:19 Ո՞չ այդ այն Մուշեղն է, որ արձակեաց զկանայս թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ հանդերձ ժանուարօք եւ վաշտկանօքն. եւ լուեալ եւս է իմ թէ` ի Պարսիկս խօսի. արդ մի՛ մտցէ դա ի ճակատ:

 4:19 Is this not the same Mushegh who released the women of king Shapuh of Iran, with palanquins and camp soldiers? And I have also heard that Mushegh speaks to the Iranians. Let him not enter the battle:

4:20 Ապա զօրավարն Հայոց Մուշեղ բարեխօս առնէր առ թագաւորն Պապ զմեծ քահանայապետն Ներսէս:

 4:20 The great archbishop Nerses intercedsd with king Pap on behalf of the general of Armenia, Mushegh:

4:21 Իսկ թագաւորն Պապ ասէ ցեպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս, թէ մի՛ լինիր դու բարեխօս. զի իբրեւ իջանէ, ի զօրսն Պարսից անկանի:

 4:21 But king Pap said to the archbishop Nerses: “Do not be a mediator. For as soon as Mushegh descends, he will join the Iranian troops:

4:22 Իսկ նա եւս քան զեւս յաճախէր մատուցանել զբարեխօսութիւնն:

 4:22 But Nerses redoubled his intercession:

4:23 Իսկ թագաւորն, քանզի բանիւ ինչ ոչ անցանէր զնորա ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ, ասէ ցՆերսէս. Կամք քո կատարեսցին:

 4:23 Since at that time the king did not stray from what Nerses said, he responded: “Let your will be done:

4:24 Բայց նախ երդումն տուր յաջ քո, զի մեզ մի՛ ստեսցէ, եւ ապա արձակեսջիր ի պատերազմ:

 4:24 But first administer an oath to him by your right hand, that he will not deceive us, and then release him to the battle:

4:25 Ապա կոչեն զՄուշեղ զառաջեաւ արքային, եւ եկն եպագ երկիր արքային. եւ մատուցեալ բուռն հարկանէր զաջոյ եպիսկոպոսապետին Ներսէսի, եւ երդնոյր:

 4:25 So, they called Mushegh before the king, and he came and prostrated himself for the king. Then, holding the right hand of archbishop Nerses, he swore:

4:26 Սոյնպէս եւ ի թագաւորին Պապայ ձեռն արկանէր, երդնոյր եւ ասէր` թէ կեցից եւ մեռայց ի վերայ քո որպէս նախնիքն իմ ի վերայ նախնեացն քոց, որպէս եւ հայրն իմ ի վերայ հօրն քո Արշակայ, սոյնպէս եւ ես ի վերայ քո. բայց միայն չարախօսացն ունկն մի՛ դնիցես:

 4:26 He also held king Pap’s hand and swore: “I shall live and die for you as my ancestors did for your ancestors, as my father did for your father, Arshak, so I will do for you. Only do not give ear to slanderers:

4:27 Ապա օրհնէր զնա քահանայապետն Հայոց Ներսէս բազում օրհնութեամբ:

 4:27 Then Nerses, the chief-priest of Armenia, blessed him with many blessings:

4:28 Ապա թագաւորն Հայոց Պապ զերիվարն զիւր եւ զիւր նիզակն հրամայեաց մատուցանել առն քաջի զօրավարին Մուշեղի. այլ նա ոչ առ. Իմովն, ասէ գործեցից. ապա դու, արքայ, զինչ եւ տացես` ի ձեռս քո եմ:

 4:28 Pap, king of Armenia, ordered that his own steed and spear be offered to that brave man, general Mushegh. However, he did not accept them. “I will use my own, king,” he said, “whatever you give, I am on your side:

4:29 Եւ զիւր նշանն եւ զզէն մատուցանէր առ Ներսէս, զի օրհնեսցէ:

 4:29 Then Mushegh offered his emblem and weapon to Nerses for him to bless:

4:30 Եւ հեծանէր իւրով գնդաւն հանդերձ, եւ զամենայն ճակատն Հայոց յարդարեալ յաջմէ զօրացն Յունաց, յաջում թեւի նա խաղայր յառաջ:

 4:30 He mounted his horse with his brigade taking the Armenian front to the right of the Byzantine troops, and he moved the right wing forward:

4:31 Իսկ թագաւորն Պապ եւ եպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս կային ի վերայ Նպատ լերինն. եւ սուրբն Ներսէս զբազուկսն հանապազատարածս համբարձեալ յերկինս, խնդրէր ի տեառնէ` զի անխայեսցէ տէր ի յուխտ իւր եւ ի սուրբ եկեղեցիս իւր, զոր պատուական արեամբն իւրով ստացաւ. եւ մի տալ զժողովուրդսն ի ձեռս անաստուած հեթանոսաց, զի մի՛ երբէք ասիցեն ի հեթանոսս` թէ ո՛ւր է Աստուած նոցա:

 4:31 Now king Pap and archbishop Nerses were up on Npat mountain. Blessed Nerses, raising his arms to Heaven asked the Lord to protect His covenant and His holy Church, which He had received through His venerable blood, and that He not give over the people to the hands of godless pagans, so that the pagans never ask: “Where is their God:

4:32 Եւ մինչ դեռ նա զաղօթսն մատուցանէր առ Աստուած, խաղացեալ ճակատեալ իբրեւ զհուր ամենայն զօրքն Հայոց ընդդէմ զօրացն Պարսից, իսկ գունդն մուշեղեան յառաջեալ քան զայլ գունդսն` յառաջամուխ տագնապեալ երթային. մինչ զի նայէր թագաւորն եւ տեսանէր զի ըստ ակն անգանէին, մինչ զի ոչ երեւէին թագաւորին նշանքն Մուշեղի:

 4:32 While he was praying to God, the entire Armenian force went against the Iranian troops like a fire. The Musheghean brigade was out in advance of the other brigades and was moving swiftly. The king was watching but the emblems of Mushegh were not discernible by him. When he did not see those emblems, king Pap began to shout to Nerses, saying:

4:33 Իսկ իբրեւ չերեւել սկսան նշանքն, աղաղակել սկսաւ թագաւորն Պապ առ Ներսէս եւ ասէ. Դու խաբեցեր այրեցեր զիս. զի ասացի ես բանս, մի՛ յղեր զայրն զայն ի գործ պատերազմիս. ահա ի զօրսն Պարսից անկաւ, եւ արդ մեծամեծ վնաս գործեսցէ:

 4:33 You deceived and burned me. For I told you not to send that man into battle. Now, lo, he had joined the Iranian troops and is doing very great harm:

4:34 Եւ ասէ եպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս. Մի՛, արքայ, մի՛ կարծեր. զի ոչ ստէ մեզ այրն այն. այլ տեսցես քեզէն զքաջութիւն նորա, զոր գործեսցէ ծառայ քո առաջի քո:

 4:34 Archbishop Nerses replied: “No, king, do not think that. For that man will not betray us. You yourself will see the bravery which your servant works before you:

4:35 Իսկ թագաւորն Պապ կարի ստիպէր առ եպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս ասել` թէ ստէպ կաց յաղօթս եւ աղաչեա զտէր մինչ դեռ խառնուրդքս են:

 4:35 Now king Pap greatly pressured the archbishop Nerses, saying: “Keep praying and beseech the Lord since they are still fighting:

4:36 Իսկ իբրեւ կարի ձանձրացոյց, ասէ եպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս ցթագաւորն Պապ. Եթէ իցէ` ուղղեսցես զսիրտ քո առ տէր, գթասցէ ի վերայ քո եւ ի վերայ աշխարհիս. եւ իցէ` թէ սրբեսցես զքեզ ի պղծութենէ գործոց քոց, ընկալցի եւ ոչ թողցէ ի ձեռաց զքեզ, եւ ոչ մատնեսցէ զքեզ ի ձեռն թշնամեացն քոց:

 4:36 When archbishop Nerses was very fatigued, he said to king Pap: “If you turn your heart to the Lord, he will take pity on you and on the country; if you cleanse yourself of evil deeds, he will accept you and will not let you out of his hands, will not deliver you into the hands of your enemies:

4:37 Իսկ ես ո՞վ եմ, զի աղաչես դու զիս, իբրեւ եթէ ես այր մի տառապեալ կարիցեմ հակառակ ընդդէմ կամացն` զոր ինչ կամիցի առնել Աստուած` առնել առ նա աղօթս, զի այնու շրջիցեմ զկամս նորա:

 4:37 And who am I that you are begging me, as if I, a poor man, can pray to God that he does not do what he wanted against his will, and thereby change his decision:

4:38 Այլ այն` որ արար զամենայն յոչնչէ, եւ ունի զտիեզերս ի ձեռին իւրում եւ զամենայն բնակիչս նորա իբրեւ զմարախ, որ չափեաց զերկինս թզաւ եւ զերկիրս ամենայն քլաւ իւրով, որ եդ զլերինս ի կշիռս եւ եբարձ զդաշտս կշռորդօք, որ գիտաց զիմաստութիւն Հօր իւրոյ եւ եղեւ նմա խորհրդակից, որ ընդ Հօրն առնէ զամենայն վճիռ դատաստանաց, դեռ այժմ իսկ զարեւելս եւ զմուտս, զհիւսիւսն եւ զհարաւ եդեալ ի կշիռս, եւ դեռ զկշիռսն ի վեր ունի. եւ ըստ մի մի ծանրութեան, յոր կողմ հակեսցէ կշիռն մեղացն, ըստ այնմ եւ դատի զարարածս իւր:

 4:38 For it was he who created everything out of nothing, he holds in his hands the whole universe with its inhabitants like locusts, he measured the heavens by a span and placed the dust of the earth in measure, I weighed mountains on the scales and hills on the weighing clock. Who understood the spirit of the Lord, I was his counselor and together with the father administers all judgments? And now he has also put east and west, north and south on the scales, and still holds the scales high, and looking at which side the scales will tilt from the gravity of each sin, he will judge his creatures accordingly:

4:39 Զի նա գիտէ զչափ արարածոց իւրոց գործոց, եւ ըստ արժանի գործոց իւրեանց հատուցանէ նոցա. զի դեռ այժմիկ ժամանակ է կշտամբութեան եւ ժամանակ յանդիմանութեան եւ ժամանակ դատելոյ. զի դեռ աւադիկ յայսմ ժամու ոչ մարդ ընդ մարդկան ճակատեալ պատերազմին, այլ դատաւորն դատաւորաց յարեաւ դատել զերկիր:

 4:39 For he knows the measure of the deeds of his creatures and rewards everyone according to their deeds, for now is the time to scold, blame and judge; for now, it is not people who have come out against each other to fight and fight, but the judge of judges has risen up to judge the world:

4:40 Արդ դեռ յայսմ ժամուս ժամանակս դատաստանաց է, ո՞վ է որ կարէ իշխել բանալ զբերան իւր առաջի նորա յայսմ ժամանակիս, եւ կամ ո՞վ է որ գիտէ զմիտս տեառն, զի եւ խրատտու եւս լինիցի նմա. զի ամենայն ինչ ի նմանէն եւ ի նոյն եւ նովաւ ամենայն. նմա փառք յաւիտեանս:

 4:40 Therefore, this hour is the time of judgment. Who dares to open his mouth before him at this hour, or who can know the intention of the Lord, and even teach him, for everything comes from him and is done through him, and glory to him forever:

4:41 Զի թէ ըստ գործոց մեղաց մերոց հատուցանէ մեզ տէր, մեզ ընդդէմ կամաց նորա մի՛ լիցի երթալ, եւ խնդրել ինչ ի նմանէ. այլ ասել` եթէ Յիրաւունս անցուցեր դու զայս ամենայն ընդ մեզ. արդար ես դու տէր, եւ ամենայն գործք քո ճշմարիտ են:

 4:41 For if the Lord rewards us according to our deeds, then we cannot resist his will and ask him for anything, but must say: you have done justly with us in everything, O Lord, you are righteous, and all your deeds are true:

4:42 Ճանապարհք քո ուղիղ են, եւ ամենայն դատաստանք քո ուղիղ են:

 4:42 Your ways are right, and all your judgments are true:

4:43 Զի զդատաստան արդարութեան ածեր ի վերայ մեր, ըստ ամենայնի զոր ինչ ածեր ի վերայ մեր. զի արդարութեամբ եւ յիրաւի ածեր ի վերայ մեր վասն մեղաց մերոց:

 4:43 You have brought true judgments upon us in all that You have brought upon us, for in truth and in judgment you have brought all these things upon us for our sins:

4:44 Զի անօրինեցաք եւ յանցեաք եւ ապստամբեցաք մեք ի քէն. մեղաք յամենայնի եւ պատուիրանաց քոց ոչ անսացաք:

 4:44 For we have sinned and acted lawlessly, having departed from you, and have sinned in everything, we have not listened to your commandments:

4:45 Ոչ պահեցաք եւ ոչ արարաք որպէս պատուիրեցեր մեզ, զի բարի գտցուք մեք ի քէն. արդ զամենայն զոր արարեր եւ զոր ինչ ածեր ի վերայ մեր` արդար դատաստանաւ արարեր. զի դատաստանք քո քաղցր են:

 4:45 We have not kept them and have not done as you commanded us, so that it would be good for us from you. And all that you have brought upon us, and all that you have done to us, you have done according to the true judgment — for your judgments are good:

4:46 Արդ մի՛ մատներ զմեզ ի սպառ վասն անուան քո, փրկեա զմեզ վասն սքանչելեաց քոց, եւ փառաւոր արա զանուն քո, տէր. զի մի՛ երբէք ամաչեսցեն ոյք յուսացեալ լինին ի քեզ:

 4:46 But do not betray us forever for the sake of your name. Deliver us by the power of your miracles and give glory to your name:

4:47 Ամաչեցեալ լիցին բռնութիւնք նոցա, եւ ամենայն զօրութիւնք նոցա խորտակեսցին. ծանիցեն զի դու ես տէր Աստուած միայն, որ փառաւորեալդ ես ի վերայ ամենայն տիեզերաց:

 4:47 O Lord, so that those who trust in you will never remain in shame. Let them be ashamed with all their might, and let their strength be crushed, and let them know that you, the Lord God, are one and glorious in the whole universe:

4:48 Եւ յամենայնի ամենեւին քո միայնոյ կատարեսցին կամք քո ամենազօր, որ հզօրդ ես եւ կարող եւ արդար յամենայնի, եւ սիրես ողորմել նեղելոց եւ տագնապելոց:

 4:48 And everywhere in everything, let only your almighty will be filled, for you are powerful, and strong, and just in everything, and merciful to the sorrowing and suffering:

4:49 Զօգուտն մեր դու գիտես, տէր, եւ պատրաստել մեզ որպէս եւ քեզ հաճոյ իցէ. զի եթէ իցէ մեզ օգուտ նեղութիւնք յաճախեա մեզ. եւ եթէ հաճոյ է առաջի քո ողորմութիւն, շնորհեա մեզ:

 4:49 You know our benefit, O Lord, grant us what you please; for if suffering is useful to us, then multiply it, and if mercy pleases you, grant it to us:

4:50 Զի որպէս իցեն կամք տեառն յերկինս, սոյնպէս եւ կատարեսցէ. եւ որով գաւազանաւ կամիցիս խրատել, ի ձեռդ քո եմք յամենայն ժամ:

 4:50 For what is the will of the Lord in heaven, so be it done, and with what rod you want to guide us, we are in your hands at all times:

4:51 Քաւեա, տէր, զանօրէնութիւնս զմեղս եւ զյանցանս ծառայից քոց. զի ո՞վ իցէ այն մարդն, որ ոչ յանցանիցէ կամ մեղանչիցէ առաջի քո. զի ոչ ոք իցէ արդար ի վերայ երկրի, եւ ոչ ոք է մինչեւ ի մի:

 4:51 Forgive, O Lord, the iniquities, sins and crimes of your servants, for who is the person who does not commit crimes or does not sin before you; for no one and no man is righteous on earth:

4:52 Զի դու միայն ես, որ առանց մեղացդ ես. եւ քո միայն արդարութիւն, որ արարեր զմեզ յոչընչէ, եւ ածեր զմեզ յայս կենդանութիւն, եւ ցուցեր մեզ ճանապարհս կենաց եւ փրկութեան, եւ զհողս այսպէս իմաստունս եւ խօսունս արարեր. եւ եղեր ընդ մեր փրկանք, զի անմահութեան վիճակին հասուսցես զմեզ:

 4:52 For only you are without sin, and only you are just, who created us out of nothing and gave us this life, and showed us the way to life and salvation, and made us earthly wise and reasonable, and became our redeemer to grant us immortality:

4:53 Յիշեա զեկեղեցի քո` զոր քո սուրբ արեամբդ ստացար, զի մի՛ զնուիրեալսն քեզ ի ձեռս շանց մատներ. այլ յամենայնի է ողորմութիւն քո, դարձցի սրտմտութիւն բարկութեան քո յուխտէ քումմէ, եւ փրկեա զեկեղեցի քո, տէր Աստուած մեր:

 4:53 Remember your church, obtained by your holy blood, and do not give what is dedicated to you to dogs; you are always merciful, remove your anger and indignation from those who believe in you and save your church, O Lord, our God:

4:54 Արդ մինչ դեռ կայր ի վերայ լերինն, զայս եւ այսպիսի եւ որ ինչ նման է այս բանից` աւելի եւ բազում քան զսոյն խօսեցաւ, մինչ դեռ կայր առ նմա թագաւորն Պապ ի վերայ լերինն. բազում եւ ազգի ազգի եւ պէսպէս աղօթս մատուցանէր մինչեւ ցերեկոյն եւ ի մտանել արեգականն, մինչեւ վաղճանեցաւ ճակատն:

 4:54 While Nerses was on the mountain, he spoke these words, and many others to the same effect to king Pap who was with him. Until evening, till sunset, till the battle ended Nerses offered many and diverse prayers:

4:55 Այլ ի պատերազմին օգնական Աստուծոյ հասանէր ի վերայ Յունացն, եւ հայաստան գնդին լինէր յաղթութիւն, եւ ի պարտութիւն մատնեցաւ գունդն Պարսից. դարձան ի փախուստ, ցրուեցան սփռեցան դաշտաց` լերանց բարձանց` խորոց ձորոց:

 4:55 During the battle, God’s aid had come to the Byzantines, and the Hayastan brigade was victorious while the brigade of the Iranians turned and fled, dispersing over the plain, high mountains and deep valleys:

4:56 Ապա զհետ նոցա լինէին զօրքն Յունաց եւ Հայոց. հասանէին, զմեծ եւ զփոքր առ հասարակ սատակէին. բայց սակաւք ի բազմաց քաջաձիք փախստեայք լինէին:

 4:56 But the Byzantine and Armenian troops pursued them and when they caught up, they killed great and small alike. However, a few Iranian braves fled:

4:57 Ապա զհետ լինէին փախստէիցն զօրքն Հայոց, եւ մինչեւ ի Գանձակ յԱտրպայական ի սահմանս Հայոց հալածէին զզօրսն Պարսից. ընդ փախուցեալսն զբազումս սատակէին զճանապարհայն:

 4:57 They were pursued by the Armenian troops as far as Ganjak in Atrpayakan, as far as the borders of Armenia. Many of the fugitives were killed on the road:

4:58 Եւ Մուշեղ սպարապետն Հայոց հարկանէր զզօրսն Պարսից ի հարուածս անհնարինս. սպաս արարեալ եւ դիպէր գնդին Աղուանից, եւ առ հասարակ զամենայն զզօրսն սատակէր:

 4:58 Mushegh, the sparapet of Armenia, struck the Iranian troops with incredible blows. Then he encountered the Aghuanian brigade and generally killed all of the troops:

4:59 Եւ հասանէր Ուռնայրի արքային Աղուանից ի փախստեանն, եւ նիզակաբնաւն ի կառափն մատուցեալ ծեծէր բազում, ասելով` թէ այդմ շնորհս կալ, զի այր թագաւոր ես, եւ թագ ունիս. ես ոչ սպանից զայր թագաւոր, թէ կարի նեղ հասցէ ինձ:

 4:59 He caught up with Urhnayr, the king of Aghuania, who was fleeing and with the shaft of his spear Mushegh struck Urhnayr on the head many times, saying: “Be grateful that you are a king and have a crown. I will not kill a king even if I am put into great straits:

4:60 Եւ ութ հեծելով թոյլ ետ նմա փախչել գնալ յաշխարհն Աղուանից:

 4:60 And Mushegh permitted him to flee to the land of Aghuania, with eight cavalrymen:

4:61 Այլ յորժամ դարձան ամենայն զօրքն Հայոց, ոչ գոյր չափ գլխանոյն ախոյենիցն` զոր բերեալ էր առաջի թագաւորին Հայոց Պապայ զօրավարն Հայոց Մուշեղ:

 4:61 When all the Armenian troops returned, there was no limit to the number of heads of champions which the general of Armenia, Mushegh, brought before the king of Armenia, Pap:

4:62 Սոյնպէս ըստ իւրաքանչիւր չափու ամենայն նախարարքն եւ մեծամեծքն եւ բովանդակ ամենայն զօրքն եւ եղեւ մեծ յաղթութիւն յերկրին Հայոց, եւ ի մէջ զօրացն Յունաց:

 4:62 Similarly, in accordance with each one’s level, all the naxarars and grandees and all the troops brought heads. There was great triumph in the country of Armenia and among the Byzantine troops:

4:63 Նոյնպէս լցան բազում աւարաւ գանձուցն զինու եւ զարդու, ոսկւով եւ արծաթով եւ բազում կարասեաւ, ձիովք եւ ջորեօք եւ ուղտօք, զոր ինչ թափեցին. զի ոչ գոյր թիւ կամ չափ, այլ կարի բազում էր յոյժ:

 4:63 They filled up with much loot of treasures, of weapons and ornaments, with gold, silver, and much equippage, with the horses, mules and camels which they took. There was so much of it that there was no number or measure for describing it:

4:64 Բայց ապա ամբաստան լինէին քսութեամբ առ մեծ թագաւորին Պապայ զզօրավարէն Մուշեղի, եւ ասէին` թէ Գիտեա, արքայ, զի մեծաւ նենգութեամբ է ընդ քեզ, եւ քեզ մահու սպասէ. զի զքո թշնամիսն համակ արձակէ. զի զբազումս բազում անգամ ի բուռն արկեալ` սովոր է արձակել զթշնամիսն. զի զՈւռնայր արքայ արձակեալ, թոյլ ետ ապրել, ի բուռն արկեալ զհակառակորդս քո:

 4:64 However some people went to the great king Pap with slanderous accusations about general Mushegh, saying: “Be aware, king, that, Mushegh nurses, great treachery toward you and awaits your death. He is always releasing your enemies. He has laid hands on many of them, numerous times but is accustomed to releasing the enemies. He released king Urhnayr, an adversary of yours whom he had seized, and allowed him to live:

4:65 Եւ վասն այսր իրաց բազում անգամ լինէր գժտութիւն թագաւորին Պապայ ընդ զօրավարին Մուշեղի. եւ բազում անգամ յանդիմանէր զնա վասն այսր իրաց:

 4:65 Because of this incident, on many occasions there was ill-will between king Pap and general Mushegh, and Pap frequently reprimanded him:

4:66 Իսկ զօրավարն Մուշաղ տայր պատասխանի թագաւորին Պապայ, եւ ասէր` եթէ Զիմ զընգերսն զամենեսեան ես կոտորեցի. իսկ որ թագս ունէին, նոքա իս ընգերք չէին, այլ քո. եկեսցես` որպէս ես զիմսն սպանի, դու զքոյսն. այլ իմ յայր թագաւոր ոչ ձգեալ ձեռն երբէք որ թագ ունի, եւ ոչ ձգեմ, եւ մի՛ այլ ձգել լիցի:

 4:66 But general Mushegh answered king Pap as follows: “I killed all those who were my peers. Those who wear a crown are not my peers, but yours. Come, just as I killed my peers do you kill yours. I have never, do not, and will not lay my hands on a king:

4:67 Եթէ կամիս սպանանել զիս, սպան. այլ ես, եթէ գայ ինձ ի ձեռն երբեք այր թագաւոր` որպէս եկն բազում անգամ, ես ոչ սպանանեմ զայր թագաւոր` որ գամ մի թագ ունի, եթէ ոք իսկ զիս սպանցէ:

 4:67 If you want to kill me, do so. But should a king fall into my clutches as has happened many times, I will not kill him, even if I am slain:

4:68 Թագաւորն Պապ իբրեւ լսէր զբանս զայս, յարտասուս հարեալ, եւ յարուցեալ ի գահոյիցն` բուռն հարկանէր զՄուշեղէ, արկանէր զնովաւ գիրկս, եւ լայր ի վերայ պարանոցին Մուշեղի, եւ ասէ. Մահապարտ են այնոքիկ` որ իշխեն խօսել չարութիւն զՄուշեղէ զառնէ քաջէ եւ զպատուականէ:

 4:68 When king Pap heard these words, be began to cry, got up from his chair, embraced Mushegh, and wept upon Mushegh’s neck, saying: “Worthy of death are those who dare to speak ill of Mushegh, a brave and honorable man:

4:69 Զի այր` որ ազգաւ պատուական է իբրեւ զմեզ, եւ նախնիքն դորա իբրեւ զնախնիսն մեր, եւ թողեալ նախնեացն դորա զթագաւորութիւնն Ճենաց աշխարհին, եկեալք առ մեզ նախնիքն` ի նախնեացն մերոց ի վերայ կեցեալք եւ մեռեալք են, եւ հայր սորա ի վերայ հօրն իմոյ մեռաւ. եւ սա միամտութեամբ մինչեւ ի մահ վաստակեալ է, եւ բազում անգամ Աստուած ետ մեզ յաղթութիւն յաղօթս եւ ի խնդրուած հօր մերոյ սքանչելւոյն Ներսիսի, ի ձեռն դորա շնորհեցաւ բազում խաղաղութիւն. զիա՞րդ ասեն ցիս զայս բանս` եթէ Մուշեղ քեզ մահու սպասէ. սա աւասիկ այր իրաւախորհ է, զի յօտար տեարսն վասն բարեկամութեան խնայեաց, զիա՞րդ դա ի բնակ տեարս ձեռն ձգէր:

 4:69 By azg he is as honorable as we, his ancestors as our aneestors. For his ancestors left the kingdom of the land of Chenk, and came to our ancestors here. They lived and died for our ancestors; his father died for my father. He has loyally labored to the point of death. Often God has given us victory through the prayers and requests of our father, the miraculous Nerses, and we were favored with much peace through Mushegh. So why do they tell me ’Mushegh awaits your death? ’ Behold, he is a judicious man, who spared foreign kings out of friendship. So why would he harm his natural lords:

4:70 Յայնմ ժամանակի բազում պարգեւս եւ պատիւս եւ բազում գեւղեան զօրավարին Մուշեղի Պապն շնորհէր:

 4:70 Then Pap favored general Mushegh with many gifts, honors, and villages:
